Manager of National Library in Honiara Magarette Talasasa reiterates the importance of libraries for schools and students during the recent workshop training held last week.
During her speech presentation at the opening of the training Mrs Talasasa stressed that school libraries play an important role in the education system, as it equipped students with life-long learning skills and develops the imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens.
She said Libraries can make a positive difference to students’ esteem confidence, independence and sense of responsibility in regard to their own learning.
She told the participants of the workshop that the training will provide skills and knowledge required in setting up and upgrade school libraries.
The manager added the areas of training will look at; introduction to school library, library management, acquisition and accessioning, introduction to cataloging and introduction to classification.
“The practical training sessions basically aims to give you a first-hand knowledge of the skills needed to start a new library or upgrade an existing school library,” she added.
Mrs Talasasa also pointed out that the current trend in the country’s education sector implemented by Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), warrants a call to improve libraries at schools as it is an important component in education, which helps to promote students learning and information seeking skills and professional development for teachers.
She concluded her remarks by thanking the participants of the workshop training for their time and commitment showed to complete the three days workshop, which ended last Friday.
