No lawyer yet for rape accuse
A young man who allegedly raped a nine year-old girl at Burns Creek in May this year is still without a lawyer.
The accused who cannot be named to protect the little girl’s identity, faces one count of rape.
He appeared yesterday in the Honiara Magistrate Court and told the court that he has not seen any lawyer.
When asked by the presiding magistrate as to whether he had made a request to see a lawyer, he said he did but had no response.
Principal Magistrate Jim Seuika then adjourned his case so that he could continue to check with the correctional service to engage a lawyer before the next date.
The matter will return to court on August 15, this year.
Prosecution alleged the accused raped the nine year-old girl on May 10, this year.
It was alleged that the girl was out fishing at the river when the accused allegedly offered her $5 if she accompany him along the road.
Whilst on the way, the accused allegedly increased the offer to $10 if she undressed herself.
It was then that the accused allegedly raped her.
Crown Prosecutor Maito’o Hauirae appeared on instructions of his colleague Willy Vaiyu yesterday for the State.
