Woman jailed for assault
A WOMAN who confessed to assaulting another woman in Honiara in 2016 has been sentenced to six months imprisonment on Tuesday.
This was after Rachael Roko pleaded guilty to one count of common assault.
The court heard the victim came to Roko’s house in search for her husband when Roko approached her and assaulted her.
The victim escaped after Roko assaulted her and bit her finger.
Since the court also took into account the length of time Roko had spent in custody, Roko has only seven more days before she will be released from prison.
Roko is also facing charges of grievous harm and demanding money with menaces in relation to a separate alleged incident in 2015.
She is co-accused with two of her relatives, Lionel Aenasi and Michael Malefo in this alleged offending, that allegedly left her former partner with only one eye.
Prosecution alleged Roko had an argument with her then partner on the morning of 26 May 2015.
It was alleged Roko then left their home and then return with some of her relatives who allegedly attacked her partner.
They were allegedly armed with knives.
After assaulting the alleged victim they led him to his father’s house to ask for compensation but were told to return in the afternoon.
The alleged victim was taken to the National Referral Hospital where he received medical treatment but had found that his right eye was damaged.
He was then admitted to the surgical ward and later discharged on June 1, when he went to the police and reported the matter.
This matter is pending trial in the Honiara Magistrates’ Court.
Chinese yet to take plea
A CHINESE woman accused of stealing more than $150,000 from her employer at Low Price Enterprise in Honiara is yet to take her plea.
The matter of Jian Jing Tong (Jane), who is facing one count of larceny by servant and is represented by Cathy Hite of Public Solicitor’s Office, was listed yesterday for plea.
She however, did not take her plea because prosecution will be sorting out her charge first before she can do so.
Her matter was therefore adjourned to May 2, for plea.
Tong from Guangdong Province in China came into the country in 2015 and started working as an accountant for the accounts section of the Low Price Enterprise.
It was alleged that in September 2017 and February 2018, Tong allegedly delivered 10 cartons of cigarettes (Pall Mall) to various retail stores in Honiara and issued invoices to them.
She then allegedly cancelled the invoices in her office, which indicated that there was no sale and then took the proceeds of the sale of cigarettes worth $150,000 for herself.
Prosecution further alleged she also stole money and converted them to foreign currencies where she used to buy valuable items.
Police recovered some of the money and some gold chains from her residence.
Police Prosecutor Iete Tebakota is prosecuting.
