For the first time in Honiara, a Careers Market targeted at post-school students to discover employment, training and further education opportunities will be held at Woodford International School on 31 May 2017 from 10am-3pm. Partnering with Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI), Woodford will host this event to encourage links between businesses and education with senior school students throughout Honiara.
Exhibitions from over 30 different businesses and educational sectors will provide information to students and parents about job opportunities, training and further education. It is an excellent opportunity for senior students to consider possible future careers and ask questions about careers and jobs to gain a better understanding about future options available to them.
In addition to the exhibition stalls, there will be several key speakers from the Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Education addressing future employment needs and advice on steps to take from school into the careers and employment sector.
The theme for Woodford’s Careers Market is “Inspiring and empowering students to shape their future and achieve their dreams”. Woodford is proud and excited to create an opportunity for school leavers to start to bridge the gap between school and students future employment.
The Careers Market is open for the public to attend, however is primarily targeting secondary school students and parents/guardians for Form 5 to 7. Woodford already has 12 secondary schools who have registered to attend. The Careers Market has been created to assist in providing information to understand the pathways from school to university, further studies, trade and traineeships or direct employment. Giving students a chance to explore different career options and an awareness of what steps they need to take after finishing school.
“The Careers Market has been initiated to provide much needed information on post school training and employment options as well as information in support services available for our community,” said Alex Haro, the school’s Community & Wellbeing Director.
SICCI Membership & Services Officer, Neil Nuia, said the Chamber sees the importance of empowering students and young people with the business community.
“The Chamber plays a role in ensuring successful entrepreneurship is pursued and reached by every means possible – including education for our children who are our future leaders.”
