Wale urges the PM to resign if his govt is incapable of hosting the Elections and Games in 2023
OPPOSITION Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Aoke-Langa Langa, Matthew Wale said the leadership under the current government is sick and that the Prime Minister must resign if his government is incapable to host the General Elections and the Pacific Games in one year.
Mr Wale uttered this in Auki Tuesday this week when referring to the DCGA government’s plan to extend the life of the current parliament for another year.
Speaking to the people of Malaita Province at the Auki Central Market, the leader of the Opposition is of the view that the reasons given by the DCGA government to extend the life of the current parliament does not add up.
He said the two reasons given are just excuses.
“DCGA government gave two reasons for its desire to extend the life of the current parliament.”
“The first reason given was Solomon Islands don’t have enough money and enough people to run the National General Election and hosting the Pacific Games in one year.”
“Therefore they will amend the constitution and move the national general election to 2024 to allow the Pacific Games to be held in 2023.”
“The second reason is that they need another year in power to pass the laws to change land act, electoral act, and other reforms they have in mind to change.”
“If you can’t hold the two events in one year please resign from the government,” the Opposition Leader stated.
Mr Wale is of the view that the national general election over weighs any event in the country and should be given priority.
“The election is more important to the people of Solomon Islands than the Pacific Games.
This government is going insane.
“It is an excuse that they cannot host both events in one year.”
“There are donor partners who are willing to fund the registration update and national general elections.”
“If we start to mark around with elections, we are playing around with the power that is in the hands of the people.”
He said in doing so, the government is undermining and denying the right of the people to go to the polls next year to elect new leaders to represent them in parliament.
“The election is the bedrock of the power of the people and is more important than the Pacific games.”
The leader of the Opposition said the way the current DCGA government is pushing for the extension of the parliament makes him question the sense of judgment of the Prime Minister and his government.
“It is wrong to weigh the Pacific Games as equivalent to the national general election.”
” The national general election should over-weigh any event in the country and not the other way around.”
“The current leadership doesn’t see the true weight of the national general election and it looks bad.”
With that, the leader of the Opposition is of the view that the country needs to hold an election in 2023 to form a new government that will have more respect for the people.
