INVESTING in new infrastructure and upgrading the current facilities is a top priority for the Solomon Islands National University (SINU).
That’s according to the University Vice Chancellor (VC), Dr Transform Aqorau, in his reflection on the achievements made by the university during the first half of 2023.
“Infrastructure development remained a top priority for the university in 2023.
“Thanks to funding from the PRC, the construction of three new Student Hostels at Kukum Campus is proceeding smoothly, aiming for completion by the end of September, just in time for the Pacific Games,” he said.
Dr Aqorau said the renovation of existing Student Hostels and the Kukum Sport Ground is also progressing as planned with a targeted completion date set for the end of July.
“However, the renovation and maintenance work on Staff Houses have faced some delays. Additionally, the construction of the FNMHS Classroom Complex and Library Extension is awaiting the University Council’s approval for contract awards.
“Although detailed building designs for several structures are now in progress through consultations, other capital projects are still in the planning stage, albeit making steady headway,” the VC said.
He also highlighted that SINU’s partnerships and collaborations with other institutions and organisations are moving forward steadily.
“Throughout the year, a total of 10 MOUs, Adjacent Agreements and Contracts have been established and signed.
“These agreements pave the way for enhanced collaboration and partnership with development partners, universities and institutions, particularly in the domain of research and development,” he added.
Regarding community engagement, SINU, like many other universities, places a strong emphasis on actively participating in outreach, social, and national events that contribute to the betterment of society as a whole, he stated in his reflection addressed to students, staff and partners.
