Dear Editor – As a concerned student and citizen of the Solomon Islands, I encourage the newly elected government to consider the issue of gender equality and women empowerment as top priority work.
This is Goal No.5 of the 11 UN Sustainable Development Goals which is integral to the achievement of the other 10 SDG.
Many root causes of discrimination must be eliminated. In particular, national laws must be reviewed to ensure the protection of women and girls from all forms of discrimination.
Physical violence against women and girls in our communities are still common practice. Yet, women do more work to support our families, including support for children from the time of birth and for husbands and old people.
Sustainable development at national level must start at the family level where the role of women is primary.
If this cannot be recognized or maintained, it would be difficult to achieve meaningful development. This includes the need for the protection of sexual and reproductive rights.
