Dear Editor – No retreat, no giving in.
Betel nut vendors are back again on the Honiara Streets.
This time round it appears to be irresistible and wild.
These consistent goings-on are happening in the eyes of the very legislator, the Honiara City Council (HCC), but no action is executed.
Who is responsible for Honiara town cleanliness remains the question. Yet, if it’s HCC then why not perform your duty?
However, let us not put the blame on HCC alone. Everyone has the responsibility to display.
And to make Honiara a hygienic and filthy free town is everyone’s (citizens) obligation.
HCC as the legislator is to make and implement policies.
And to make those policies effective, it’s everybody’s calling to collaborate with HCC through its responsible division the HCC law enforcement to ensure everyone abide to the law of the Council (HCC).
Just yesterday I went to buy some vegetables at the Central Market.
And guess what, there are vendors sitting there selling betel nut and cigarettes placed in boxes down the drive way that leads to the fish selling area.
If I got a camera at that time, honestly, I would capture a photo of those vendors.
Unfortunately, I have none.
This I presume the seven meter-by-law passed by the HCC assembly last year has been violated and useless.
Through the buildings crack or corridors in town there, they (betel nut vendors) are, heads popped up with their betel nut and cigarette selling.
HCC law enforcement squad must wake up from their slumber and do something to stop such ill behaviour that will make our town unclean and not appealing to visitors (tourist).
The HCC, as the legislator responsible for our town, must get tough on offenders.
Prosecute crooks that are violating the city council bylaws.
I believe the worst is yet to come. Sooner or later our town will turn into a disposal site if no action is taken against these people.
