STUDENTS and staff of the Jones Adventist College (JAC) in North Vella, Western Province, celebrated the World Environment Day on Monday.
World Environment Day falls every 5June and the theme for this year is ‘Beating Plastic Pollution’ which highlights the importance of reducing plastic pollution in our environment.
The celebration at JAC begun with a colourful parade with teachers and students carrying banners that highlighted the importance of protecting the environment, especially the forest, vegetation and marine resources.
A staff, Zoleilo Paul, told Solomon Star that about 12 trees were planted at the school that day to symbolise importance of trees to their environment.
During the event, each class also showcased crafts made from recycled plastics to emphasise the importance of plastic recycling.
Mr Paul said an awareness was also conducted on the negative impacts of plastics to the environment through video shows and presentations by both teachers and students.
“The students were informed of the dangers of plastic pollution to our earth and to our ocean and marine species.
“Plastics do not rot but remain for long time and poses great danger to marine lives,” he said.
Mr Paul said the event was organised by the school’s Home Economics Department and all the students and staff enjoyed it.
He said the school principal, Lyndon Ligo, was happy to see such an event organised for students and staff and thanked them all for making the celebration a successful one.
The World Environment Day celebration ended with a work session where students were divided into groups to clean up in and around the school.
Some of the girls cleared the shower bloc area which has been littered with plastics.
The World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1973, in Geneva, Switzerland.
