Eight secondary schools have been confirmed for the 2016 Our Telekom Kakamora inter-secondary schools Athletics carnival to be held at Waimapuru National Secondary Athletics track from 11th April – 15th April.
They are Santa Ana CHS, Namuga CHS, Waimasi CHS, FMC CHS, Pawa PSS, Ramah CHS and Waimapuru National Secondary School. Waimapuru will host this year’s competition.
Chairman of the organising committee and Deputy Principal of the school Phillip Ohoto’ona said, ”As the host preparations are well underway to ensure the venues are ready before the event next month”.
“We anticipate the carnival to be competitive as Makira province is known for producing some of the nation’s finest athletes in athletics in the past. This event ensures that the legacy lives on”.
The aim of the event is to identify talent as well as providing an opportunity for our students studying in these schools in the province to come together in sports rivalry.
Students will compete in both track and field events. The track events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3,000m, 5000m, 10,000m, 4x100m relay, 4 x 400m relay.
The field events; Shot-put, javelin, discuss and long jump. The competition will be in two categories as follows; Junior category is for students in form 1 – Form 3 and the senior category for students in Form 4 – Form 7.
Coaching course for sports masters is also being organised for the participating schools from 29th March – 30 March”. An official from the athletics Solomons is conducting the sessions and the school is grateful for the support received by the Association.
Ohoto’ona acknowledged Our Telekom as the main sponsor of the carnival. “Our Telekom Company’ for sensing the need to be part of this event in this part of the country. Telekom’s coverage service does not only apply to telecommunication network but also other community services seeing fit to be part of it.
“In this case it is sports and as such we are grateful for that. With the strong support from the provincial government in recognising this event along with the education division of the province we are confident this event will be successful and hopefully will become a flag ship event of the province annually.”
