A FORMER Bishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) Diocese of Malaita, The Right Reverend Dr Bishop Terry Brown, has been called to rest over the Easter weekend in his home country of Canada.
Late Dr Bishop Terry Brown was bishop for the Anglican Diocese of Malaita from 1996 before retiring in 2008.
He was also a member of the Solomon Islands Truth and Reconciliation Commission which produced the TRC report in the country’s peace building process.
The commission was formed to investigate the causes of local ethnic violence between 1997 and 2003 involving groups in his diocese and neighbouring Guadalcanal.
In an obituary issued on April 2nd 2024 by the Anglican Diocese of Niagara which Late Dr Bishop Terry Brown served under in the Parish of Saint Michael until is passing, the Diocese said the absence of the Late Bishop’s presence will be felt by each and every one in the Parish of Saint Michael.
“The members of our Parish Family at St. Michael’s held him in high esteem as a valued friend.
“Not only did Bishop Terry preside over a funeral, a baptism, and a confirmation of members of the St. Michael’s parish, but he also led our worship services while our priests were absent due to vacations or illness. He conducted all of these events in addition to leading our worship services.
“The absence of his presence will be felt by each and every one of us in a big way,” the Diocese said.
According to the Living Church online, Late Dr Bishop Brown was born in Iowa in 1944. He was educated in Iowa and Michigan, receiving a B.A at Kalamazoo College before beginning his doctoral studies at Brandeis which was interrupted by US Army Service in Japan in the late 1960s.
He began a lifelong connection with the Anglican Church of Canada after his return from the military, and trained for ordination at Trinity College, Toronto.
“After his ordination to the priesthood, his main ministries were lecturer at Bishop Patteson Theological Centre in the Solomon Islands from 1975 to 1981, tutor in church history at Trinity College Toronto from 1981 to 1984, and Asia/Pacific mission coordinator for the Anglican Church of Canada’s General Synod from 1985 to 1996.
He was consecrated as the fourth Bishop of Malaita in 1996. He made the decision to retire in 2008 and relocated back to Hamilton, Canada.
The Diocese of Niagara said during his retirement, he served as an associate priest at All Saints Church in Hamilton, as the bishop-rector of The Church of the Ascension in Hamilton, and most recently, he was appointed as an honorary assistant at Christ’s Church Cathedral in Hamilton.
All of these positions were held in Hamilton, Canada.
“Bishop Terry served the Diocese of Niagara, the Anglican Church of Canada, and the wider Anglican Communion with unflinching devotion throughout his fifty years of ordained ministry.
“He was a member of the Anglican Communion.
“We would be grateful if you would pray for Bishop Terry’s family, friends, and co-workers at this difficult time,” the Diocese said.
A memorial service will be held in his honour to memorialize his life at a later date, and the funeral arrangements will be notified after they have been finalized.
