KING George Sixth (KGVI) National Secondary School in East Honiara last Friday marked a significant milestone in its history with the official opening of its own cafeteria.
The event, attended by students, staff, alumni and distinguished guests, including the Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton and the Member of Parliament for East Honiara, Morris Toiraena.
In his remarks, Principal Augustine Omearo welcomed all attendees and expressed excitement about the occasion.
“We are super excited to have you with us this morning for the handing over and opening of the school’s new cafeteria.”
Principal Omearo acknowledged the significance of the event, dubbing it as an important day in the history of KGVI School as it is the first time for it to have its own cafeteria.
He said the cafeteria symbolises the ongoing collaboration between KGVI, its alumni and the Australian government – vital partnerships that have helped shape the school’s development.
Highlighting the benefits of the cafeteria for students and staff, Principal Omearo said, “From now onwards, students, especially day scholars, staff and visiting parents and friends will have access to nutritious food at the cafeteria.
‘’This will undoubtedly have a significant impact on students’ learning. Personally, I believe that healthy, nutritious diet can lead to better grades and higher performance.”

Principal Omearo expressed heartfelt gratitude to High Commissioner Hilton for his role in the project.
“I would like to sincerely thank you, Your Excellency Rod Hilton and the Australian Government through the Solomon Islands-Australia partnership program for your generous funding for this cafeteria project. Your support demonstrates your belief in our school vision. Once again, thank you very much.”
Principal Omearo also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the KGVI Class of 1983, who played a pivotal role in bringing the cafeteria project to fruition.
“KGVI School is very grateful indeed. Thank you for the many sacrifices that you have undertaken to ensure the completion of this project. This reflects your deep connection and support for the school. Again, a big thank you very much to the Class of ’83.”

The principal also extended appreciation to the SC Vision construction group for constructing the cafeteria and the quality standard of their construction work.
“Thank you very much for the job well done.”
The new cafeteria offers a space where students can enjoy nutritious meals, fostering both academic and social growth.
The cafeteria project was implemented through a $432,525.43 funding from the Australian Government and a $225,851.24 funding support from KGVI’s Alumni class of 1983.
