THE controversial KHY Buni market in Gizo, Western Province has been sealed with high visibility police presence.
This came after two days of public awareness conducted by the Provincial Disaster Operations Committee (PDOC) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) together with Gizo Police Officer yesterday began guarding the site in two tents.
As a result, there were no signs of any betel nut vendors. Most of them are now using the satellite market at Banana Valley. Others relocated to
the main Gizo Market.
Only outboard motors were able to use the spot.
According to the Camp Management Officer in Charge Lizzy Wong, she explained police presence at KHY is to ensure no one is allowed to use the spot to sell.
“To market produces like fruits, vegetables, root crops and fish they have to do that at the main Gizo market. Only vaccinated vendors are allowed,” she added.
She said Gizo Police officers will be closely watching and monitoring any betel nut vendors that are selling at the KHY area and along the street.
Those found will be arrested.
Meanwhile, Risk and Communication Team from the Gizo Hospital have also gone out to Gizo residences to conduct the health related awareness.
