A PEACE and reconciliation ceremony was on held at Kindu near Munda, West New Georgia, Western Province, last Friday ending nearly six years of division amongst community elders.
Western Provincial Premier Billy Veo witnessed the occasion, urging other communities across Roviana, Lavata and the province to follow Kindu’s example.
The rift began when a group of new elders assumed responsibilities assigned to them, leading to disagreements over traditional governance.
This resulted in two rival groups of elders and the enthronement of Paramount Chief Holmes Matao Saeve five years ago, which was not accepted by some elders at that time.
The division severely affected governance and community progress in Kindu.
Held in front of over 500 villagers and invitees, the ceremony included representatives from churches, neighbouring communities and the Ministry of Traditional Governance, Peace and Ecclesiastical Affairs (MTGPEA).
A key highlight was the exchange of traditional shell money Bakiha, symbolizing the resolution of differences.
Church leaders and government officials praised the reconciliation effort, noting its importance to Kindu’s smooth embarkment on ambitious development plans, including a multimillion-dollar hotel project on Banga Island, near Munda.
According to reports, foreign investors have already expressed interest in the site and the Western Provincial Government (WPG) has pledged full support for this initiative.
Premier Veo congratulated the Kindu leaders for their decision to reconcile, emphasising the importance of unity to building the community and overcoming challenges.
He highlighted lessons learned from his visit to China, where he observed how families prioritise strengthening their households.
“This is one example we must adopt—putting family and household unity above all else. By doing so, we can create a solid foundation for progress,” Premier Veo said.
The ceremony marked a turning point for Kindu as it seeks to move forward with new leadership under Paramount Chief Holmes Matao Saeve.
