KOKONUT Pacific Solomon Islands is assisting the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) and health development partner organisations to prevent the spread of a deadly diarrhea outbreak that has so far claimed at least 18 lives.
Last week Kokonut Pacific donated a box of local hand-made soaps to the Health Promotion Division of MHMS to help encourage good hygiene practices in our communities and prevent the spread of this outbreak.
“Kokonut Pacific saw there could be an urgent need for soaps to promote healthy habits, and contacted MHMS and health partners to see how they could help,” said operational manager for Kokonut Pacific, Wilson Kikolo.
“Good hygiene practices such as washing hands with soap can prevent spread of germs which can lead to serious health problems,’’ Mr Kikolo said.
The soaps will be distributed to hospitals and clinics around the provinces. Kokonut Pacific plans to donate more in the near future.
“Thoroughly washing hands is such a simple and effective way to prevent all kinds of diseases, including diarrhoea, and we are very pleased to be able to offer our help,” said Mr Kikolo, who is a qualified Pathology Laboratory technician.
Kokonut Pacific also donated 2000 soaps to those left in evacuation centers during the recent flooding tragedy, during which health and sanitation became a very serious issue.
