Dear Editor – This letter serves to inform you of the above subject matter. The rapid increase of kwaso (home brew) consumption among individuals have increased rapidly in Honiara.
And its becoming an alarming concern for the government and people of Solomon Islands. The daily consumption of this local illegal brewed alcohol not only poses health risks to drinkers but also creates irritating disturbances and damages in our communities and to those of us who hate participating in such activity.
To simply illustrate how serious kwaso epidemic is in Honiara, I’ll use my community Matavale, West Honiara as an example to represent what has been going on in most communities in the city.
Here, we face constant disturbance from kwaso drinkers every single day, this involves music blasting from speakers almost every day causing creating daily noise pollution, shouting and unnecessary screams from drinkers, fight breakouts, and domestic violence in homes against women and children.
To make it even worse, there are also cops and correctional officers who are active participators of this activity.
Our street has become unsafe and turn out to be one of the dangerous places in Honiara.
As a citizen of this nation, I am deeply concern for this country and hope that our government and its people work together to curb this situation before it escalated further and transform this beautiful nation into a crime-free land.
Yours sincerely,
Bridget Rihuoha
