THERE has been little progress in the implementation of Ward Development Funds (WDF) projects in Western Province since the revised budget was passed last year.
And this raised concerns amongst some of the Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPA).
The legal groundwork and the approval of the Western Province Assembly was made during its March 2023 sitting and this was further endorsement during the revised budget session in November 2023.
However, it was revealed that there was no tangible progress made in the execution of mini-projects earmarked for development.
Since the Western Provincial Government came into power, there has been a noticeable absence of action in the utilization of the allocated ward funds.
This stagnation has prompted concerns amongst the elected representatives and the communities they serve.
Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview yesterday, MPA for Ward 10 North Vella Lavella Hon Freedom Tozaka expressed his dismay at the delay in implementing the promised mini-projects.
“Since we have been elected as MPAs for Western Province, nothing has been implemented under the so-called WDC (Ward Development Committee) although it has gone through the legal blueprint and passed by the Western Province Assembly in March 2023 and later during the revised budget in November 2023,” Hon Tozaka said.
“The frustration is palpable as the community members eagerly await the positive impact of the approved Ward Development Funds on essential mini-projects.
“These initiatives were designed to address local needs, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the overall well-being of the residents,’’ he said.
Hon Tozaka urged the Western Province to address the causes of the delay and expedite the implementation of the WDF.
“It’s the year 2024 now and still, nothing has happened. Our people are waiting and we need answers on why there has been such a prolonged delay,” he emphasized.
“The Ward Development Funds are integral to the socio-economic development of Western Province, and the lack of progress raises concerns about the effective utilization of resources allocated for community development.
“As the constituents remain in anticipation, there is a collective call for transparency and accountability in ensuring that the promised projects are delivered without further delay,’’ he further added.
As Western Province navigates the challenges of implementing the Ward Development Funds, stakeholders are urged to work collaboratively to identify and address any impediments hindering the realization of these crucial community development projects.
