LANDOWNERS of Kulakwai and Lalofere tribal land in Fataleka, Malaita Province, have declared their stand against a mining prospecting operation intended for their land.
The tribes staunchly declared their objection to any mining operation after hearing that the Win Win Mining Company has proposed to conduct mining prospecting on their land.
A spokesman for the two tribes, Henry Misitana said the two tribes have agreed not to allow any mining prospecting and operation on their land.
He warned members of the two tribes who do not agree with the collective tribal decision to stay away from making any secret deals with any mining company.
He said Kulakwai and Lalofere tribes have agreed to take action against any illegal entry into their land by any mining or logging company.
Mr Misitana added that the two tribes are firm on protecting their land and resources from any distractive operation like mining and logging that will only deny their future generations of a safe environment.
“We want out resources and environment to be protected for our future generations.
“Our tribes have agreed not to allow any mining or logging development to enter our land because they will only destroy our resources and environment,” he added.
Mr Misitana said the only types of development that the two tribes allow on their land are tourism and carbon trading, which they are now engaged in with Winrock International.
Solomon Star understands that a mining company called ‘New Asia Mining Company’ has signed a Surface Access Agreement with more than 20 tribes in East Malaita last year to carry out mineral prospecting.
However, a dispute amongst landowners has hindered the company from carrying out its mineral prospecting operation up until now.
