A landslide damaged a section of the tar-sealed road in Kilusakwalo, central Kwara’ae Constituency in Malaita Province last week.
This was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in recent days.
The aftermath of this natural disaster has created a risky situation for motorists, demanding extra caution when driving this compromised stretch of the road.
As of Monday this week, an on-site visit by Solomon Star revealed extensive damage to almost half of the lane, increasing the risks for passing traffic.
The landslide, a consequence of the persistent heavy rains experienced in the province and other parts of the country, has raised concerns among local transport operators.
Dickson Laumani, a transport operator, voiced his worries about the bad road condition caused by this natural disaster.
He emphasized that the current state of the affected area is particularly unsafe, especially for loaded vehicles during nighttime travel.
Mr. Laumani further warned that the ongoing heavy rainfall could worsen the situation, potentially leading to accidents.
“The road here is not safe for traffic and passengers. It can cause accidents if the heavy rain weather continues,” expressed Mr. Laumani.
He is urging the responsible authorities to take immediate action to avoid accidents and protect lives.
It is noteworthy that the road network in Auki, inclusive of the damaged section in Kilusakwalo, underwent assessment for tar-sealing by a team of engineering experts from China.
This assessment is part of a broader feasibility study for the Auki Road Tar-sealing Project.
This project is promised to receive funding from the People’s Republic of China.
