Sasau village in East Kwara’ae in Malaita province is desperately in need of water tanks after their water source was buried underground after a landslide two years ago.
Sasau community representative Rex Mae told the Solomon Star office in Auki in an interview yesterday that villagers have been in desperate situation to fetch water each day.
Mr. Mae said the struggle of collecting water for daily use is real after the river that they usually got their water from got buried under ground.
He said the blockage caused by the landside makes it hard for the villagers to use the water like before.
“This is a daily challenge for men, women, and children in the community.”
He said whenever there is big rain; it covers the part that was affected by the landslide which then flows over to the other side but then the quality of water is not good.
“The water that is usually collected on the other side of the blockage is brown and muddy.”
Mr Mae said the land slide has covered an estimated area of 15-20 meters which blocked the water source from flowing freely.
“This is a disaster for the villagers and they call on the responsible authority to step in and help with the provision of water tanks as soon as possible.”
For the past two years they have to walk long distance to collect clean drinking water and its affecting many families.
