THE Lauru Kuvojo women’s netball squad has been crowned the 2016 Solomon Games champion on Friday.
Lauru narrowly edged the determined Honiara flank with a close score of 24-23 (full time) in a striking match yesterday afternoon at the Multi-Purpose Hall courts.
For Lauru side, it was a history in the making since it was their first time to grab the top prize, gold medal in the Solomon Games.
The game on Friday got the court parked as hundreds of spectators flooded in to support their respective teams.
It’s an equal fight between the two tough teams however; Honiara could not utilize its chances which gave the young Lauruans an advantage.
In the losers final, team Guadalcanal beat team Malaita with a full time score of 34-16.
Vice President of Solomon Islands Netball Federation (SINFED), Ronald Bei Talasasa said he was impressed with the teams’ performances during the competition.
“I am impressed with the provincial teams and Honiara because several of the players are very young and they are able to play at this level.
“The young talents performed brilliantly and SINFED is very impressed.
“The crowd was fantastic and I would like to thank them for their support.”
Meanwhile, Lauru Kuvojo’s team captain Edvina Meloto said she was proud of the achievement and happy with the performance her girls have displayed.
“For us, its history and we thank God for the strength that He gave us to accomplish our mission.
“It is our first time to play on a cement court like this because at home, we only play on rough ground surfaces.
“We thank our fans and supporters for cheering us and with our determination, we managed to snatch the gold medal which is very rewarding for us,” she said.
