GOVERNOR General His Excellency Sir David Vunagi reminds Members of the Parliament (MPs) to lead by example and live up to the expectation of the country as national leaders.
Sir Rt Rev. Vunagi made this profound statement when he delivered the ‘Traditional Speech from the Throne’ in parliament to open the 3rd meeting of the 11th parliament, Monday.
In his congratulating the Prime Minister and the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) Sir Vunagi said the overwhelming responsibility rests upon their shoulders.
He also took the opportunity to encourage and remind Ministers of the Crown to discharge their constitutional mandate with integrity and statesmanship.
“The future of our beloved country depends on your sound judgment and vision in leading our country forward into the future.
“I pray that you will rise to the occasion and deliver on your policies for the good of this country,” Sir Vunagi said.
He also encouraged the Leader of the Official Opposition to exercise the check and balance functions in a vigorous but responsible and ethical manner.
“The Official Opposition plays an important Constitutional role in ensuring that the government-held accountable, transparent and attentive in its decision making and in the discharge of its constitutional mandate in leading and governing our people,” he added.
Sir Vunagi also reminds the Leader of the Opposition Group to continue with the good work that has done so far in representing a balanced and constructive view on national issues.
“It is my prayer that you continue to advocate for the national interest by independently discharging the functions of your office without fear or favour,” he further stressed.
Sir Vunagi further reminds the MPs that they are each representative of their people in this esteemed house.
He urges them to discharge their constitutional mandate without fear or favour.
“This is an overwhelming and ethical responsibility that needs sound guidance, ethical leadership and requires a clear vision.
“I trust that you will do your duties with due diligence and integrity,” Sir Vunagi beseeched them.
It’s understood that Sir Vunagi also took his time to highlight some of the DCGA achievements and programs during his speech.
