The Australia Fiji Business Council welcomed the formal lifting by the Australian Government of travel sanctions against certain Fijian citizens.
The Australia Fiji Business Council president, Greg Pawson, said the council has long been an advocate of changing the sanctions.
“This is because, whether intended or not, they were an impediment to the conduct of bilateral business.
“This is a further positive step forward in the bilateral relationship which will facilitate further business and community engagement between Australia and Fiji.”
Mr Pawson noted that Australia is the largest investor in Fiji and is the largest contributor to Fiji’s tourism industry with Australians comprising more than 50 per cent of the 700,000 visitor arrivals in Fiji annually.
He highlighted Australia is the largest destination for Fiji’s exports and is the largest source of Fiji’s imports excluding petroleum.
