LOCAL piggery farmers in Malaita province have generated good income over the Christmas and New Year session.
Report reaching this paper confirmed there is high demand for pig from groups and organizations to celebrate Christmas and New Year.
In an event to celebrate the opening of Church building at Rafoki in West Fataleka last week more than hundred pigs were slaughter for feasting.
The event itself benefits the local piggery farmers around that area to earn a high income from their selling.
A local piggery James Dickson in West Kwara’ae, told this paper that he earns good income few weeks prior to Christmas and New Year festive.
He said he had sold 6 pigs worth $12,000 and that will help him to build his family house project this year.
Mr Dickson experienced that he did not meet the demand due to the high demand for pig from people and groups that visited his piggery.
“I experienced that the demand for pig during Christmas and New Year session is beyond supply at my farm.
“I earned more than $12, 000 dollar after selling my pigs last week.
“I know people living in Honiara who normally come for holiday has budgeted for Christmas and New Year and they want to celebrate with good menu particularly pig.
He said Christmas and New Year is a peak time for local piggery farmers to earn income.
Another piggery farmer Christopher Tagwailangi has expressed a similar experience after earning more than $5,000 last week.
He said he sold two pigs to a community event to celebrate the closing of Christmas sport event last week.
He said the demand for pig is beyond the supply of local farmers at his area as prize for a pig range from $2000 to $4000.
“I realised that piggery is an important business at the domestic market compare to other long-term project like kava farming.”
“I raise my two pigs only for a year and earn more than $5000.
“For me, it just a Christmas gift for my family” the farmer said.
