Citizens of this country have been urged to support local products in the country through purchase of locally produced food produce.
Philip Subu President of the Malaita Province Youth Council President issued the appeal after Malaita Taro Company recently launched its frozen taro which is now hitting the domestic market.
Based in Auki, Malaita Taro, is a locally registered company supported by taro farmers across the province.
They are currently supplying frozen taro products at three Bulk shop outlets in Honiara which are selling at $44 per kilogram.
This development is encouraging news for taro farmers nationwide, as it opens up opportunities for them to engage in local and overseas trading, he said.
Mr. Subu, who has been a staunch advocate for local taro farmers over the years, emphasized the importance of recognizing their hard work by purchasing their products.
“Promoting local taro products is a step toward adopting a healthier lifestyle while supporting rural farmers.
“Local products need community support to thrive and simultaneously contribute to economic growth,” the president said.
The management of Malaita Taro expressed their excitement about launching this new business venture to support rural farmers.
“Our aim is to promote taro and make it accessible in local markets while supporting our rural farmers,” they stated.
“Buying taro from Malaita helps connect markets with residents in remote parts of the province.”
Recently, Malaita Taro Company arranged to source taro from local farmers in North Malaita to enhance their product offerings.
“We freeze the taro and distribute it to bulk shops in Honiara. In Auki, it will be available in LF shops.
“We have already sent 100 packets of taro to Bulk shops in Honiara. We want to make taro available for our community because it’s one of the best local foods,”
Currently, Malaita Taro is purchasing taro at $8 per kilogram and encourages people in Honiara to try their taroproducts, now available in Bulk shops.
