THE Solomon Islands Meteorological Services (MET) has issued a Tropical Cyclone (TC) Warning Number Eight for the eastern part of the country as of 7am yesterday.
The warning is currently in effective for Temotu Province, according to the statement.
As of 5 am yesterday, a severe Tropical Cyclone Lola, categorised as a Category Five storm was located with a central pressure of 940 hectopascals, near 13.9 degrees latitude south and 169.3 degrees longitude east.
“This puts the cyclone approximately 99 nautical miles (183 kilometres) south-southeast of Tikopia Island, located within Temotu Province.
“Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola is tracking south at a speed of 04 knots, moving towards the northern parts of Vanuatu whilst intensifying,” the statement said.
Residents of Tikopia and Anuta Islands have been advised to prepare for gale-force winds exceeding 33 knots (87 kilometres per hour) for the next few hours.
“The rest of Temotu Islands can expect winds ranging from 20 to 30 knots (37-56 kilometres per hour).
“Seas are forecasted to be very rough, with moderate to heavy swells measuring between 3.5 to 7.5 meters. Coastal flooding is anticipated over Tikopia and Anuta Islands,” the statement added.
In addition to rough seas, the statement said rain showers and thunderstorms are still expected over Temotu Province.
“The adverse weather conditions may pose a risk of landslides and flooding in communities residing near hill slopes, close to large rivers, streams, and low-lying areas,” it added.
