A DRIVER of a short boot Toyota car narrowly escaped death when he veered off his lane hitting an oncoming dump truck along Vura 2 road, East Honiara mid-morning on Saturday.
The driver of the cab was believed to have been drunk and was sleeping behind the wheel at the time of the accident.
An eye witness said, the taxi was heading towards Naha when he veered his lane and crashed onto the dump truck loaded with gravel.
“It looks as if the taxi driver was too drunk and lost control. He must be asleep when suddenly he veered off his lane and hit the on-coming dump truck head on,” the eye witness said.
She said the cab driver was lucky to have escaped death despite the severity of the accident which she thought the driver would have died.
The driver was pulled out of the taxi with minor injuries and taken to hospital by police after taking his statement.
The driver of the dump truck was unharmed but shocked to what happened since this was the first accident he had come across in his entire life since driving.
He however was surprised the driver of the taxi was alive and he thanked God for that.
A Kukum Traffic officer attending the accident said, drivers should always be careful and be reminded that
drink driving is a traffic offence and they are risking their lives and the public when they are driving under the influence of liquor.
Driver of the taxi is expected to be charged.
