PEOPLE of Makira/Ulawa province are in desperate need for development in their province, in terms of infrastructure requirements.
This was made known to the Solomon Star by community elders within the Star Habour region of Makira, in an interview a fortnight ago.
In was understood that, the biggest infrastructure need for the people of Makira province are roads and bridges that will surely connect the communities and people of the province.
“There are no road links around the Island, just like the other provinces.
“The difficulty in terms of land and sea transportation has left our province way behind in terms of development,” a spokesperson for the concerned people of east Makira said.
He added that, this is the greatest need that the people of east Makira have ever wanted for a very long time.
“We want this infrastructure issue to be solved in the near future. This is our cry for development to persist in our side of the province.
“Relying on sea and air transportation for this long is not development to us,” he added.
The concerned villagers told the Solomon Star that, if the leaders of the province in both national and provincial level may plan ahead to extend the roads and bridges down to the eastern part of the island, it will be a welcoming news for the people of east Makira.
The Solomon Star understands that, this is a long time issue given that, in the recent 8th Premiers conference in Honiara, provincial premier Thomas Weape also highlighted the poor condition of roads despite local contractors are assigned to do the work and the absence of key development infrastructure of the province in his presentation.
Meanwhile, as the new provincial government will be chosen before the year ends, this will be yet another bigger task ahead for the province itself.
