VOTERS within Kira Kira Township, the capital of Makira/Ulawa province have welcomed their new premier, Stanley Siapu.
Mr Siapu was elected premier at Tuesday’s election held at the provincial capital Kira Kira.
He is expected to form the new executive provincial government following his election.
Reporting to Solomon Star, Kira Kira resident Simon Waki said that the election was very peaceful and the people welcomed the announcement of their new premier.
“The result was accepted by everyone living here in the provincial capital. Everybody here was very happy to have a new comer in the provincial assembly as our new premier elect.
“It was a peaceful event and Kira Kira station is calm without any serious disturbance,” Waki said.
Stanley Siapu, the provincial member for ward 15, Santa Ana Island won his only rival Peter Baewai by 12 votes to 8 in the 20 member assembly during yesterday’s election.
Mr Waki said, now that the new provincial government will be announced soon, he urges those that will make up the next government to consider more development in the provincial capital and the province as a whole.
“Now that the new premier is being elected, the people of Makira/Ulawa province are hoping to see positive changes and new developments happening in the province under the leadership of Mr Siapu,” Waki added.
Former premier, Thomas Weape was ousted in the recent provincial elections.
