The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MALS) has been rehabilitating the cattle industry in the country following a drastic reduction of cattle over the years in the country.
Permeant Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) Jimmie Saelea revealed this during his speech on last Thursday during the World Food Day celebration in Munda.
Mr Saelea said MAL is currently rehabilitating the cattle industry after experiencing a drastic reduction of cattle over the years.
“The national beef cattle industry as you know is being rehabilitated following the drastic reduction in numbers over the years.
“The national plan now is to develop breeding, multiplication and distribution farms for the cattle industry. These are located in Guadalcanal, Malaita, and of course Western Province,’ Mr Saelea said.
He said two farms in Guadalcanal and Malaita are fully funded by the government while the one in the Western Province is a private farm with minimal government’s support.
“On this note I must applaud the owner of the farm for his vision. Public- Private Partnerships in agriculture development is another way forward to getting tangible development in rural areas.
“We cannot always depend on Government to provide answers to our needs for development. Therefore having private people to rehabilitate our cattle in the country is much appreciated by the government,” Mr Salea said.
