THE Mala I Tolo Indigenous Guardianship Trust (MITIGT) Mentorship Program has officially launched and rolled out to a number of schools in Malaita Province.
The launching of the mentorship program provided opportunity for students to prepare themselves for further studies after completing their secondary education.
According to Mala I Tolo, the mentorship program is currently introduced to Form 5 students at Maoro Community High School, Auki Community High School, Adaua Secondary School and Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School.
It stated that this innovative program pairs mentors with students to guide their learning through the cutting-edge ‘Moodle’ Online Learning Platform.”
“Similar to platforms used at universities like USP and SINU, Moodle offers courses in Information Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Resource Management, Leadership and Governance, Culture, and Literature,” it said.
Mala I Tolo said the mentorship is designed to promote self-learning as the program places a strong emphasis on student autonomy with approximately 70 percent of learning done independently by students.
The mentos of Mentors provide guidance on navigating the Moodle tools and resources and thus foster a culture of independent and critical thinking.
According to Malaita I Tolo, the mentorship program will span for three weeks in the first semester for with Form 5 students which comprise the initial cohort and Form 4 students are to follow.
“The program aims to prepare high school students for university studies by equipping them with relevant skills and fostering critical thinking abilities.
“By investing in these young leaders, the Mala I Tolo Mentorship Program seeks to cultivate a generation of smart, forward-thinking individuals capable of tackling complex challenges both now and in the future,” it added.
Mala I Tolo has been providing support of laptops and solar system equipment to schools in Malaita Province since its establishment in 2022.
The project only focuses on Malaita Province.
