DESPITE facing social and economic challenges, Malaita Province continues to benefit from its strong partnership with the national government and its development partners in its pursuit of economic development.
Malaita Elijah Asilaua highlighted this ongoing collaboration at the 2024/2025 Revised Budget Meeting in Auki last week.
He said these benefits are the result of a coordinated efforts aimed at achieving the Malaita Economic Cooperation and Transformation Government Policies, which prioritise the development of a comprehensive Master Plan based on its vision for a long-term strategic framework for economic growth and prosperity.
“This approach will help the government establish a greater Auki and expand connectivity to other regions by improving road infrastructure, thereby stimulating trade and creating economic opportunities for the province,” said Premier Asilaua.
Premier Asilaua said a recent survey conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Housing (MLHS) paved the way for the development of an urban development strategy, which aims to create a greater Auki.
“Our Master Plan considers key guidelines and policies related to provincial alienated land, infrastructure, transportation, housing, economic development and environmental sustainability,” he added.
The Premier added that his government prioritises investment opportunities to promote the productive sector.
“Our strong collaboration with the national government, diplomatic partners and development organisations aims to strengthen the private sector by fostering equitable and sustainable growth through agriculture, tourism, fisheries, forestry, marketing and trade. This will be supported by essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings,” he elaborated.
Premier Asilaua highlighted the importance of social sectors, including health, education, and law and order, in supporting the development of institutions and economic infrastructure.
“The growth of private entrepreneurship will lead to higher returns on investment, the creation of more employment opportunities and income-generation activities, which are key to growing our economy,” he added.
