THE Laugwata community in West Kwara’ae Constituency in Malaita Province has received a timely donation of sanitation items from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) through the Malaita Provincial Health Authority yesterday.
The sanitation items which consisted of a new toilet system with its fittings and cement were delivered by the Malaita Provincial Health Authority Promotion Officers, Janet Nole and Nester Rara.
The donation of the sanitation items was a gesture of appreciation by the Provincial Health Authority to the Laugwata Community for its continued abidance with health and hygiene requirements.
The community is part of the Model Community Programme since 2012. The programme was introduced by the South Seas Evangelical Church.
The sanitation items were purposely for the upgrade and improvement of the Laugwata SSEC Church sanitation facilities.
Principal Health Promotion Officer, Nester Rara, at the handing over ceremony said water and sanitation are an important component to a healthy community setting.
She said it is very important for a community guest house or a church to have such a setup as part of a healthy community environment.
Mrs Rara added that such setup helps to reduce health problems such as skin diseases, diarrhea, hookworm and other diseases.
“If we don’t have proper water and sanitation systems in the community, the chances of getting sick will be higher,” she added.
Mrs Rara said the delivery of the toilet system is sign of appreciation to the community for its commitment and involvement in the SSEC Community Model Programme.
She said the Malaita health authority is happy to work with churches and communities that are involved in the Community Model Programme.
Laugwata Community Leader and Pastor, John Filiga, thanked the Malaita Provincial Health Authority for the timely support of the toilet system.
He said the toilet system will help the community to maintain a healthy environment.
Pastor Filiga added that the provision of the new toilet system will improve the community church ablution block.
