POLICE in Malaita Province are warning public transport providers to take extra precaution when transporting passengers during this wet weather.
Malaita Provincial Police Commander David Wate made this call following a public bus accident in Auki, Friday last week.
The accident occurred near the Seventh Adventist Church area in Auki.
Mr Wate said the accident happened because of the slippery road condition during Friday’s afternoon rain.
He said it was lucky that those involved serious escaped injuries.
“I appeal to the public transport drivers along South, East and North roads to take extra care in these wet and slippery conditions to avoid accidents,” Mr Wate said.
He also strongly urged drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
“This is a traffic offence and those caught will be charged,” Mr Wate said.
“It is the drivers’ responsibility to make sure their passengers are safe and it is the duty of vehicle owners to make sure their vehicles are road worthy and fit for public transportation.”
“Always think safety first during this wet weather,” Mr Wate said.
