MALAITA Province’s 41st Second Appointed Day celebration officially commenced in Auki yesterday with a vibrant display of cultural activities and mini-trade show.
This five day event marks an opportunity for the people of the country’s most populous province to showcase their rich traditions and ethnic diversity.
The celebration commenced with a remarkable display of traditional foods by various cultural groups and entertainment.
Attendees of the cultural activities were treated to a display of various dishes, highlighting the cooking talents of local communities.
Cultural performances also provided an entertaining time for the public.
Government ministries, State-Owned Enterprises and private businesses have set up stalls around the celebration venue, showcasing their products and services to the public.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) are actively engaging with the public as they promote their services.
The opening ceremony attracted a large crowd, with villagers from communities near Auki and visitors from Honiara arriving early to participate in the festivities.
The atmosphere is electrifying and this is complemented by live music from local bands.
For many young attendees, this celebration is indeed an exciting and unprecedentedly exciting event.
17-year-old Gabriel Mason, who witnessed the first day of the celebration, was impressed by the stalls set up in the streets of Auki.
He expressed excitement at seeing people from various parts of the province come together for the provincial day festivities.
“I’m amazed to see so many people participating in the first day of the celebration,” he said.
“What I really enjoy here is the live band performances, the product displays in the different stalls and the active participation of young people like me.
“It’s different from past Malaita Day celebrations, which were mostly attended by older people and was quite boring.”
An elder, Davidson Fata expressed his delight over the four-day Second Appointed Day celebration.
He remarked on the high turnout of officials from the government, state-owned enterprises and companies operating in Malaita to showcase their services and products.
“This event gives me an opportunity to learn about new companies and businesses in Malaita.
“The opening of the celebration reminded me of past Independence Day celebrations, which were usually held for a week.
“I hope this will instill a sense of pride to be a Malaitan in the younger generation and also allow them to see for themselves the cultural richness of Malaita,” Mr Fata said
The event features a variety of entertainment, including traditional dances and performances, which are captivating the audience and are fostering a sense of unity among participants.
The celebration will continue until Thursday when the official Second Appointed Day program will be held.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and his delegation will travel to Auki on Wednesday to join the main event on Thursday.
