Fijian swimmer Meli Malani broke the national men’s 50 metre breaststroke record during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Competing in the fourth heat, he clocked 29.87 seconds.
Malani eclipsed the national record of 30.36s seconds which he set in May.
He was happy to set a national record. His time was only 0.7s from qualifications to the next stage.
Malani swam again in the 100m butterfly and posted a time of 1.91 minutes.
Fatigue from the previous race had taken its toll on the young swimmer who was unable to beat his personal best, stating that his aim was to set a time below one minute.
Tieri Erasito, Cheyenne Rova and Caroline Puamau competed in the women’s 100 metres freestyle.
Puamau impressed recording a time of 59.04s which saw her top heat two. Rova set a new personal best time of 1.41m.
Erasito competed among seven others and managed to secure first place with a time of 1:03.12m beating her personal best of 1.05.26m which she set at the 2009 World Championships.
She was happy with the results but emphasised she needed to work on her finish.
Matelita Buadromo set a national record in the women’s 200 metres individual medley. She clocked 2:26m shaving 0.03 seconds off Puamau’s record set back in 2003.
Ratu Banuve Lalabalavu Tabakaucoro clocked 10.51s in the men’s 100 metres dash while Eunise Bese clocked 12.42s in the women’s 100 metres….
