THE cognitively-impaired person who was attacked by stray dogs in Gizo Town on Wednesday has died in Gizo Hospital from his injuries.
His death has caused grief and anger in Gizo as people demanded responsible authorities to urgently address the escalating issue of stray dogs in Gizo Town.
The person was attacked early Wednesday morning by a pack of 16 stray dogs. Those who witnessed the incident intervened to assist him but he had already sustained serious injuries.
He was rushed to Gizo Hospital that same morning but died early this morning.
Following the person’s death, the community in Gizo is now rallying to demand responsible authorities to take action against the issue of stray dogs in Gizo.
The community is demanding responsible authorities to implement animal sterilization programs and adoption options for these stray animals.
Many claimed that the stray dogs are now more aggressive and pose increased threat to the public.
Incidents of dog attacks on people in Gizo has been on the rise in recent months but this was the first incident which resulted in the death of a person from such attacks.
Local authorities have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and are in the process to formulate a comprehensive action plan to tackle the issue of stray dogs effectively.
However, the community hoped action will be taken because nothing has happened before when people were attacked by stray dogs in Gizo.
