An outspoken Malaita man, Nathaniel Maegwari has thrown full support in the call made by provincial Premier, Daniel Suidani to ban the import of yeast into the country.
Early this week, premier Suidani called on the government to take a leading role in the fight against the illegally home-brewed alcohol locally known as ‘Kwaso.’
“The government by now should come up with key actions to help police in the fight against Kwaso.”
“As we all know, yeast or Mauripan is one of the main substances used in mixing the illegal drink,” the premier stated
The premier adds that because of the free access to yeast sold in local shops, the Police are fighting a losing battle against kwaso.
In support of the premier’s call, Mr. Maegwari said that the only way to battle and defeat kwaso related problems in the communities is the total banning of yeast in the country.
“Kwaso has been the source of many problems affecting communities and families at rural homes in the province.
“Therefore, I believe a ban on the product and limiting its access through a licensing regime could reduce the production of kwaso in our communities.”
Mr. Maegwari said culture and ‘wantok system’ discourage individuals from not willing to report kwaso brewers or dealers at the community level.
“I Believe the only best way to stop kwaso brewing is for the government to put restrictions or ban yeast from shops in the country,” Mr. Maegwari said.
