HONIARA City Council Mayor is facing a leadership challenge as moves are underway to remove from the position.
A Councillor within the Honiara City Council (HCC) has confirmed that a move to oust the HCC Mayor Alfrence Fatai will be lodged as soon as he completes his 18 months ruling, as stipulated in the constitution.
Reports reaching the paper said a number of frustrated HCC Councillors have described Fatai’s leadership as doom, and reflects a person unfit to lead the administration of Honiara City.
In an exclusive interview with this paper the Councillor claimed since the City Mayor was installed to the position early last year he failed to show any progressive steps of improving HCC governance, except for attending functions.
“Therefore his leadership is heading nowhere, since he had never held talks with development partners and donor agencies to prepare way forward for improving Honiara and its governance, thus, the only thing Fatai knows is to attend to parties,” he added.
Meanwhile, HCC clerk Charles Kelly when contacted yesterday said his office has no idea about any move to oust the Mayor, but explained that a motion of no confidence would be valid only after 18 months of Fatai’s administration.
“This is according to the Act,” the clerk stated.
In response to the proposed motion, the City Mayor said it was news to him, however added it is their democratic right to move a motion against him.
“I have no idea about the move but if anyone wants to remove me from the position then go ahead. Its okay with me.”
The City Mayor said his 18 months is approaching at the end of June next month, so it is open for any motion against him.
“I don’t inherit this position so I’m not surprise of the news to oust me,” Mr Fatai stressed.
He said a council meeting will be held at the end of June and thats the time any elected member of the Council can move a motion against him.
