THE first ever Mayor’s Cup Independence tournament ended successfully on Tuesday at the King George Sixth sports field.
This was according to the Chairman of the organizing committee Councilor Greg Malefo.
“Today is treated as a special day for the Honiara City Mayor’s Cup due to its success that we now witness,” Malefo said.
“Teams have displayed tough football competitiveness over the past days and have shown true spirit of sportsmanship and peace, which encourages us to organize more sporting activities in the near future,” he added.
Malefo said although there were challenges encountered during the five days of competition, everybody involved gave in their best to make the event a success.
“We have faced a lot of challenges along the way, the weather, tough competition rules and other disturbances beyond our control but with the support from everyone, we managed to successfully end the event.
“Firstly I would like to thank Mayor Andrew Mua, his deputy Eddie Ngava, and other councilors for coming up with this initiative and organizing the event.
“I would also like to thank the participating teams and supporters who have shown courage to take on the challenges faced and displayed a very cooperative attitude to see this competition ends successfully.”
The competition ended with the prize presentation to the top four teams; Rove Lengakiki with $15, 000 first prize and the winning trophy, second prize of silver medals and $10, 000 was awarded to Vavaya Ward 4, Mataniko third with a prize money of $7,000 and bronze medals and the fourth prize of $5,000 went to Kola 2.
The Fair Play award of $500 was awarded to Vahokesa.
