THE Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Mr. Stephen Maesiola has signed the “Contract between the Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Kitano Construction Corp. Japan – for the Upgrading of Kukum Highway (Phase 2) Project” and the “Minute of the meeting contract negotiation”.
Representing the Kitano Construction Corp. Japan is the Project for the Improvement of Honiara International Airport Project Administration Manager Mr. Emelito Recalde.
During the Signing Mr. Recalde also mentioned that a team of engineers that will be working on the Kukum Highway Upgrade phase 2 will be arriving in the country on 23rd July 2021 depending on their travel documents and approval from the COVID-19 Committee since they will be travelling from a high risk country japan.
The Kitano General Manager for overseas construction division Mr. Kiyoshi Katagami will be arriving in the country on Friday 25th June 2021 and will undergo all COVID-19 quarantine requirements.
Furthermore, Mr. Recalde clarified that due to the urgency of the need to execute the project, he was assigned to quickly facilitate the signing for the two important documents of the project with the authorities since he is already in the country.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development explained, as the implementation ministry for this project, he acknowledged Kitano Construction Corp on behalf of the Solomon Islands government and highlighted that the Upgrade of the Kukum Highway Phase 2 is one of the most important and essential projects for this country that serves both the industrial areas within Honiara City and the Honiara International airport and wanted the project to commence as soon as possible.
According to the contract duration, the Upgrading of Kukum Highway (Phase 2) Project is expected to be tentatively commenced Thursday 1st July 2021 and will be expected to be completed by Friday 30th June 2023. The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development kindly remind all the market vendors along the kukum highway up to Henderson airport to start demolishing their market stalls, as per the requirement by the contractor ( Kitano Construction Corp) prior to commencement of work.
