THE Minister for Education & Human Resource Development Lanelle Tanangada is amongst Ministers of Education and Senior Ministry of Education and Training officials from the Pacific Islands region attending the 42nd session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) General Conference which commenced yesterday.
The 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference which convened at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, will conclude on November 22.
Minister Tanangada is accompanied by a senior officer of the International Education Coordination Unit of MEHRD Ms Sophie Liligeto. The unit is responsible for UNESCO programmes and activities in Solomon Islands.
Minister Tanangada will deliver a Country Statement during the Plenary and General Policy Debate of the 42nd session of General Conference.
The General Conference which is held every two years brings together Member States and Associate Members of the UNESCO and observers for non-Member States, intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Solomon Islands has a longstanding relationship with UNESCO since its membership in 1993 and this year, the Solomon Islands National Commission to UNESCO was proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the country’s membership of UNESCO.
The 41st session of General Conference was also held around November 2021. It occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and so the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development (MEHRD) was unable to send a delegation to attend the conference.
Because of this, Solomon Islands was represented by its Ambassador to UNESCO Jean Paul Carteron.
