THE Government through the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) has recognised the service offered by all teaching professionals in the country.
Minister for Education Lanelle Tanangada highlighted this in her remarks to mark the World Teacher’s Day celebration in Honiara, Tuesday.
The event commenced with a fellowship service at the Holy Cross Cathedral followed by a parade to the National Museum auditorium.
Minister Tanangada said she was happy to join the fellowship service which honoured and recognised the service teachers have rendered to the children and students of this country.
“It is the role of the central government through the MEHRD and education authorities to ensure that you are recruited and employed so that you can provide quality teaching and learning for students,” she said.
She said she noted the theme for this year World Teacher’s Day is “Teachers at the heart of change today and beyond.”
She said the theme indeed cause for the need for change.
“Change must start first from the lives of anyone of us as teachers either in schools or at home.
“Teachers have the responsibility to impact the lives of a student with good deed.
“As teachers our place is not to condemn and criticise it is to lift up our students,” she said.
She said being a teacher is a higher calling from God.
She said teachers influence for their students cannot be overestimated.
“As educator we have the great calling, responsibility and privilege set before us and we are call to take it on with God’s grace and wisdom.
“Connecting this encouragement with this commemoration of World Teacher’s Day the government recognises the right and responsibility of teachers in the country.
“Our role is for our students to feel comfortable, respected and accepted in our classroom and schools,” she said.
World Teacher’s Day is celebrated every 5th of October each year to reflect on the work of the teachers throughout the world.
