Dear Editor – I am writing to express my deep disappointment with the headline used in the recent article titled “Catechist student nabbed in murder incident” published on August 27, 2024.
As someone who values accurate and responsible journalism, I believe the way the headline was framed has unfairly tarnished the good name of the Nazareth Apostolic Centre (NAC) and the broader religious community associated with it.
While it is important to report on serious incidents such as this, I find it deeply concerning that the headline emphasizes the suspect’s association with the NAC as a Catechist student.
This wording gives the impression that the individual was a recognized Catechist, when in reality, they were merely a student, and their actions were driven by personal disobedience and the influence of alcohol—not by any teachings or values of the institution or its denomination.
By linking the NAC and its role in religious education directly with this tragic event, the article inadvertently casts a shadow over the entire institution, which is dedicated to the spiritual growth and moral development of its students.
The actions of one individual, particularly one acting under the influence and contrary to the principles being taught, should not be used to reflect on the institution or the faith it represents.
I urge you to consider the impact such headlines can have on the reputation of religious organizations and the faith communities they serve. I respectfully request that greater care be taken in the future to ensure that headlines and reporting do not unintentionally mislead or harm the reputation of institutions that are committed to positive contributions to society.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that the Solomon Star News will continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism in all its reporting.
Sincerely,
Tony Laugwaro
