CASES of sexual offence continue to be reported and received by the Police in Gizo, Western Province.
This was revealed by a police investigator during the recent Gizo High Court Circuit to the Western Province.
The officer who declined to be named told Solomon Star that cases related to underaged sex and rape continue to be on the rise in the province over the past months and its very concerning.
The officer said in August, there were five cases recorded by police within a week.
He said a case allegedly involved a father and a son sexually assaulting a ten-year-old girl.
“It shows how vulnerable our young girls are to these evil-minded people,” he said.
The police investigator said this is just one of many similar cases reported to police each month.
He added that investigation is conducted into all cases that were reported.
“If there are enough evidences, then the matter is brought before the courts,” the police officer said.
During the August High Court Circuit in Gizo presided over by Judge Ronald Bei Talasasa eight of more than 10 cases involved sexual offences.
Judge Talasasa also expressed concerned over the growing trend of these sexual offences.
He said the rising number of sexual offences committed on young girls under the age of 15 is very disturbing.
Judge Talasasa said girls no longer find protection in their homes because they have been sexually exploited and abused by people who are known to them.
A doctor working at the Gizo Hospital also told Solomon Star two weeks ago that he had conducted medical examination on several young girls in August who were alleged to be sexually assaulted.
This was for the submission of medical report as required by the police to form part of their investigation into sexual offence cases.
The doctor said most of these victims are young girls.
The medical officer also expressed concerned over the increasing number of these sexual offence cases.
