Mentally-ill woman hit a mother with a rock
A MOTHER was rushed to the Gizo Hospital, Western for treatment after she was attacked and hit with a rock by a cognitively-impaired woman on Friday evening.
Initial report stated the mother was returning home from a church program as part of the Easter weekend when the incident happened to her.
She received an injury to the side of her head, after a cognitive-impaired lady came from the side and hit her with a rock.
The incident occurred near one of the shops in Gizo.
There are a number of cognitive impaired people that normally roam the streets of the provincial capital.
And two of them are females. They would normally spend the night at the MSG Complex.
They struggled to feed themselves. Sometimes they would be offered raw fish to eat.
It was revealed that prior to the attack the cognitive impaired lady was teased by a group of male youths.
She picked up a rock and attempted to shoot the youths.
However, during the confrontation, the woman, without knowing what was happening, passed through the section of the road.
That’s when the cognitive impaired lady turned on her and hit her at close range.
She received injuries and was taken straight to the Gizo Hospital just after 7pm.
The Solomon Star was at Gizo Hospital when the mother was brought in for treatment.
A nursing officer on duty that evening also confirmed that the mother received an injury to the side of her head.
A duty doctor on Friday night managed to treat the mother by stitching the wound.
A few of the family members and friends who brought the mother to the hospital said it was an unfortunate incident because the mother was walking past the woman when she was attacked.
Another mother said the attack is a cause of concern because it would create so much fear to many mothers and children while walking along the streets.
There have been calls in the past by Gizo residents to remove some of the people who are cognitively impaired from the streets of Gizo.
This is because they continue to pose a risk to the public.
The Solomon Star had witnessed a number of cognitive impaired patients who continued to chase and harass women and children along the street of Gizo.
One of them would grab food from people, especially women and children who are walking along the road.
Sometimes he would also steal from the market vendors and would get a chase from market security officers.
While a couple of them would normally roam the street asking for money.
The increasing number of cognitive impaired people in Gizo is attributed to over use of drugs like marijuana and copen.
Currently, there is no place where such cognitive impaired people can be placed for treatment in the province.
And most times, relatives just allow them to roam freely in the communities.
This has posed so much risk to the public.
