THE woman who buried her baby alive in a shallow grave last year at Kaibia, Honiara, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
Justice Francis Mwanesalua sentenced the 34-year-old Malaita mother in the High Court.
Nelly Waitai had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted murder.
The maximum penalty for attempted murder is 14 years imprisonment.
Time she spent in custody was taken into account.
The mother after secretly giving birth to a baby girl in the early hours of May 20, last year buried the baby girl alive in a shallow grave.
The newborn was rescued from the shallow grave her mother dug and buried in by a man who was on his way to the shop at dawn to buy bread for breakfast.
The baby girl was alive and taken to the National Referral Hospital where she received medical attention and later released into a new home.
