HEAD of the Anglican Church of Melanesia says alcohol is one of the main causes of problem within families.
And Archbishop Reverend David Vunagi urged mothers to speak up and address the problem within families.
Rev. Vunagi was speaking at the opening of the 13th general meeting of Mothers Union in Honiara, Monday.
“In the diocese of Central Melanesia we have an alcohol dry-out programme to minister to alcohol abusers,” he said.
“We will be happy to reach out to the other dioceses if we have the financial support to do it,” he added.
Rev. Vunagi said alcohol abusehad affected society today, which in turn drastically affected the mindset of people.
“This leads parents, chiefs, catechist and some clergy not demonstrating the leadership qualities expected of them,” the archbishop added.
“They have been over powered by social issues that confront them so they lost control of the people they supposed to lead.”
Rev. Vunagi said it is common scene that some men, women, and youths openly indulge in alcohol consumption without anyone making attempts to offer advices to maintain order.
“Therefore alcohol is an issue that must be addressed in the family.”
He also said nowadays infidelity within marriages destroyed many families where casual relationships (known locally as 02) have continued to increase in the country.
He said there are many innocent children, women and men who have been betrayed by this kind of relationship between husband and wives.
“In this case you members of the Mothers Union must come out from your comfort zone and be imaginative in addressing the issue that effect family life,” the archbishop said.
