A UNITED States (US) based Youths for Human Rights International team last week organized a walk for Human Rights on Saturday 13th July and trained youths on Sunday 14th at the art hub about the 30 conventions human rights.
According to one of the human rights youths activists in Honiara, the training will pave the way to forming a human rights office in Solomon Islands when all the youths are well trained.
“This training will prepare them to go on to rural communities to aware youths about their rights,” the youth said.
Speaking to the paper on Saturday Philip Subu one of the youth activists of human rights said many youths are not aware of their rights.
“Such as the right to education or the right copyright, a special law that protects one’s own artistic creations and writings,” he said.
He continued that many times the rights were preached but have been neglected from the eyes of the laws to implement.
“Most rights were recognised and the laws are followed such as the women’s rights and the child protection,” he said
According to Maverick Sade from the Youth Campaign Solomon Islands youths have also signed a pledge for declaration of the human rights after their walk from Town ground SMI compound to Multipurpose.
This is to show that they have supported the declaration as a youth and as a citizen who understand their rights and wants others to know too, Sade said.
Those who joined the walk included Rotaract, PYFAC, YWPG, Youth Online Campaign, One more shot and other individuals who are passionate about human rights.
