Government through the Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Makira Constituency (CMC) Honourable Nestor Ghiro continues to support development in his constituency by injecting more than SBD$2.8 million worth of equipment to boost economic activities in CMC.
On Wednesday 25 January 2023, Honourable Ghiro and his Constituency Officer handed over a new grader machine, four new 3-ton and two 2-ton vehicles to the recipient representatives in Honiara.
The equipment has been shipped to Kirakira on Wednesday 12 midnight and will be handed over to the recipients next week.
Honourable Ghiro said the machine and vehicles were part of the project from last year 2022.
“Last year we use our share from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to purchase machines, vehicles and saw-mills for our constituency,” he said.
He further explained that their constituency development approach last year was influenced by the policy redirection undertaken by the government which aimed at cushioning the negative impacts of COVID-19 on the economy.
The revival of the Commodity Export and Marketing Authority (CEMA) now trading as Solomon Commodities signalled a new era for farmers in CMC whose incomes depend largely on cocoa, copra and other commodities.
“CMC for that matter hosts the country’s CEMA buying centre thus we must provide vehicles for our people to transport their products and actively engage in economic activities in our constituency.
“With that, we also purchase machines to build road network within the constituency and also to make it easy for our people to easily access the products and market,” Honourable Ghiro said.
He added that the road works will continue as soon as the machine landed in Kirakira.
In terms of recipients and ownership, Hon. Ghiro explained that his Constituency Office will hand over these six new vehicles to the different registered groups, tribes and other small business organisations within the constituency. “So, the groups that will be receiving these new vehicles are registered entity with the Company Haus.”
“My constituency has been practising this approach for some time now and it works better for us.
“We try to discourage individual ownership and put more emphasis on groups that registered with the Company Haus, or tribes and other small organisations who are actively engaged in economic activities in the constituency,” he added.
Honourable Ghiro thanked the Government for funds through CDF and also acknowledge PRC for the part of the funds which was used for this project.
CMC Constituency Development Officer Grayvis Tahiri call on the recipients to respect the assets and use them for their intended purpose to improve their livelihoods.
MRD is fully committed to seeing that all rural Solomon Islanders become meaningfully participated in development activities to improve their social and economic livelihoods.
MP for CMC Honourable Nestor Ghiro is the current Minister for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
